Good traction

By Thomas H. Lawler

I live in Washington state and always been concerned about traction needs in the winter months. Many people like the “cable” type of tire chains since they are “springy” and it makes installing them easier (versus actual “chains” like these that don’t stay straight across the tire, are much heavier, etc). However, I was with some others when we ended up sliding off the road. We instantly intalled some of those “cable” type chains for trying to get back on the road, but the cable that goes in a circle broke instantly at one of the joints (where a cable going across the tire joined it). So that instantly made me lose all faith in those styles making me want something that’ll hold up in any situation.

These have a small bar welded to each chain link that contacts the road to help give better traction and/or longer life making them more expensive than many others. I did have a set of these where a link broke right where there was one of those welds, so the weld may have weakened it. I’ve not had that happen again, but haven’t used them that many times every year either. The big thing when installing any kind of tire chains is to remember that you want them to be tight and virtually part of the tire while on the road. Don’t just drape them over the tire, connect the hooks to the end link of the chains and start driving because they may flop off the tire easily, start whipping your fenders or even catch on things like a brake line ripping the car apart. You want to work all the slack you can out of the chains and end up with the same number of loose links on both sides of the tire. If you end up with 1 or 2 links on each side that can flop around, that’s not a big deal, but 3 or more can again damage the car. To contain them, hold the hook, place the end link that can flop around on it, then place the hook in the link that makes it tight and the end one will be trapped. Many OEMs recomend driving a few blocks on them, then checking them again for slack. Besides doing these things, having the “chain tighteners” (that are a huge rubber band) or some short bungee cords to constantly be pulling them tight to the tire helps as well (with those taking out any slack you missed).

With these installed correctly, they will be as good as any others & last as long or longer.

GET THESE!

By Nick

Well I live up in Alaska so for about 6 months out of the year the roads are covered in ice and the ditches are full of vehicles and bottomless snow pits. Now I only use the chains when i have to which is very rarly but they make all the difference especially these! I own a 4×4 Ranger and with the V bar chains I can pull just about anyone out. I have pulled out more 1 tons from ditches with these then any other type of chain or other traction device. Once you get them on the v bars dig right into the ice and give you all the traction you could ever need. I plan on ordering another set once I have some extra money.

Awesome Product

By JB

Just an awesome product. Towed heavliy loaded trailers up and down logging roads in the adirondacks with two wheel drive vans for two weeks, never could have done it without the chains. Like all chains a little tricky to get on, but you wont find any remedy for that. Not going to set any speed records either, but allow me to go places I wouldnt have a chance of making with out them. Also thrown them on in the spring when buried in the mud a few times and drove right out. If your spinning on a slick patch you can lay them down in front of the tired without putting them on and move a few feet as well, a quick easy fix. I work on docks in upstate New York and Vermont, go up and down a lot of steep driveways, and I wouldnt be cought dead without a pair of chains in my van or truck year round. We have a large fleet of vehichles and every one has a pair, from our little S-10 to our F 550s and even our semi. Mostly we drive 2 wheel drive chevy 3/4 ton vans, and with out the chains we would be stuck almost daily. Also put them on all our forklifts to get around the yard all winter. If you cant tell I LOVE THEM. An absolute must have if your going to be traveling a lot in the winter. Would recomend bringing something to repair them with (and extra link or little steel S hooks work great) because they do occasionally break. Most often because they are put on loose, so make sure they are on there tight! Tighten them as much as you can, pull forward a little bit to let them center up well, and tighten them again. Bring some little bungies and put them on the outside as well (a cheaper alternative to their “rubber tightener”, this will tighten them a little more and help you take care of the tail, because you dont wont that swinging around and smaking into your vehichle. Do this and drive slow and you shouldn’t have any problems. Not meant for commuting on pavement however, will gouge the black top. If your looking for seomthing more along those lines the cable chains are what you want.

Awesome Chains!!!

By J. P.

Great product at a great price. I used them extensively in northwest Texas over the X-mas holiday 2009. I drove my F-250 past twenty-two miles of traffic at a standstill on US 287 South between Electra and Jolle. Whst a difference the chains made. I spent X-mas eve night stuck behind semis in an ice blizzard. Awesome chains got me through. Most of those stranded spent another night on the road (or near it).

Effective, simple, easy to install

By J. W. Theis

The title says it all! These chains work great and take only a few moments to install. The cams make for a simple installation by sufficiently tightening the chain around the tire to work in a pinch. If you plan to keep them on for any distance, I *HIGHLY* recommend the rubber chain tighteners (less than $8 a pair here on Amazon) offered by Security Chain Company.

Paired, these products can be safely installed all winter long in low speed applications and turn even marginal tires into grip monsters. The chains seemed expensive to me as I prepared to purchase them (I spent $180 to clad four tires), but I realize now that they are one heck of a deal.

Great, easy to use chains

By John

I have used these chains for 2 seasons and have driven hundreds of miles on them. I love them and will never use another chain. They are quick and easy to attach. I am frequently in and out of the “chain-up area” before other drivers have even straightened out their chains. The low profile, 9mm chain links make for comfortable driving even at higher speeds.

I use them on a 2008 Subaru Impreza Outback. The owner’s manual for this car says to never use chains or cables because they may interfere with the anti-lock brakes and steering mechanisms. This is apparently typical for smaller sports cars. But the state police won’t always let me up the pass without chains installed, despite AWD and all-weather tires. I took the chains and the car to the Subaru dealership, had them put the car on a lift and install the chains. The dealership said they were fine and would not interfere with sensitive parts. I have been using these chains without issue, and after 2 seasons they show minimal wear. I fully expect to use them for 2 more seasons. I have not experienced the cable problem another reviewer had.

I’ve never put chains on before and these are a cinch!

By M. Glenn

I have a two year old and don’t have a lot of time for trying to figure out how to get some chains on the tires while she’s waiting in the car so we can get home up our mile long dirt driveway up a mountain to get the groceries in the fridge and start dinner. These are PERFECT! Very easy to get on and off. The car doesn’t even slip on the tricky switch back turns that are the toughest. One little tip: when you’re sliding the chain behind the tire and you get a bunch of ice/slush/dirt stuck in the tip where the other end needs to go in, just whack it against the tire to clear it out. I love my chains and feel so much more safe and secure having them in the car in the winter.

Great chains, lousy cable

By Car Chain Man

These chains work great in the snow. I drove about 20 miles in a Northern Vermont snow squall using these chains. Unfortunately, I noticed, when I was taking them off, that the cable that holds the chains on the side of the tire was broken after using them this one time. I will be contacting Thule ASAP to discuss warranty coverage. They run about 165 – 170 bucks a pair.
